Commonplace book containing marine watercolors, songs and poems, [ca. 1810-1820].

Manuscript notebook containing ca. fifty poems, epigrams and songs and twenty-four illustrations, including watercolors, pen and ink sketches, and pencil drawings. Many of the poems have naval themes, including M. G. Lewis's The Disabled Seaman, Samuel Rogers's The Sailor, William Shield's The Arethusa, the broadside ballads Jack's the Lad and The Midshipman's Complaint, The Wounded Sailor's Petition, and To the Memory of Twelve Seamen Slain on Board the Enterprise, private ship of war, February 7, 1779. Other poems include a large selection from the work of Thomas Moore, particularly from Irish Melodies; works by Cowper and Goldsmith; comic epitaphs; and Occasion'd by Seeing Corregio's Picture of Mercury Teaching Cupid to Read. Seven songs accompanied by manuscript music voice settings: On a green bank gentle Mary was seated; Let others sing of flames and darts; Dear Chloe, attend to th'advice of a friend; In spite of love, at length I found; Smalilou, or There was an Irish lad, who loved a cloister'd nun; Mr. Mullins and Miss Whack; Paddy the Piper. The volume also contains twenty-four watercolors and pen and ink sketches, mostly of ships under sail or approaching harbors. Subjects also include the Eddystone Lighthouse; a midshipman; a sailor with a wooden leg; Dandies; an English cottage; and an incomplete copy of Samuel Elmer's Snared Hare.
